Kids Gardening Science Fair Projects

Learning While Landscaping
Container gardening science fair projects for kids...

Kids' gardening science fair projects are more than just fun, they are educational and useful. As your kids complete their projects they will not only understand how plants germinate, grow and reproduce, but they will also learn how to grow organic food to eat. In order to complete this type of science fair project you will first need to come up with a hypothesis to test. For example, you may want to create a hypothesis that explores the relationships between the ratio of light and dark that a plant is exposed to.

The next step is to set up the containers for your kids' gardening science fair projects. The containers that you select need to reflect the plants that your kids will be experimenting with, for example, if you are planting marigolds then you can get away with smaller containers then if you are planting tomato plants. In addition to selecting your containers you will also need to select soil, compost and support devices for your plants (if needed). If you will be conducting light experiments then you will also need to pick up a grow light.

Step three is to design your experiment. For example, if you are testing if the amount that a light your plant is exposed to impacts it rate of growth then you will need to set up several experiments. Each experiment will have its own lighting system and timer. Each timer will be set for a different amount of time, i.e. 12 hours of light, 16 hours of light or 8 hours of light. You may also want to create a control experiment that has a plant exposed to natural light/darkness.

Step four is to set up your science fair project journal. This journal will be used to collect data for your experiment. The first entry will include your hypothesis, a description of the tools and supplies that you will be using and a description of your experiment. Each additional entry will document when observations were made, what experiment is being observed and what you observed.

The fifth step is to analyze your data. This is done by charting growth rates and comparing them. It also includes evaluating the observations that were made.

The final step is to create a report and a display board. You will want to start with your report. This report will document each step in the scientific method. The display board will be a visual representation of your science fair project report.

You can also do DNA extraction science fair projects with the vegetables or fruits that you grow in your garden.
